What is ATEX?

ATEX stands for “ATmosphere EXplosible” and refers to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The term stems from the European Directive 2014/34/EU, which governs the manufacture of equipment within these environments. The directive ensures that both electrical and mechanical equipment, as well as protective systems, meet stringent safety requirements before being placed on the EU market.

The ATEX certification is used in industries where gases, vapors, dust, or powders are present, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, food production and chemical processing. Many of these processes rely on accurate and robust weighing systems. ATEX-certified load cells are specifically designed to operate safely in these hazardous environments, maintaining performance and accuracy without compromising safety.

Robust and reliable

Eilersen load cells tolerate up to 1000% overloads and sideloads, as well as torsion. With a complete, digital measuring chain based on capacitive sensing, and a simple electrical and mechanical installation, errors associated with conventional strain gauges have been eliminated.

Field-replaceable cables

Load cell is independent from cable, allowing custom load cell cables up to 100 m, and the possibility of replacing damaged load cell cables without needing to recalibrate.

ATEX Zones

Eilersen load cells are OIML certified and ATEX/IECEx certified in zone 1, 2, 21 and 22.

ATEX Applications

ATEX load cells are essential in processes where gases, vapors, dust, or powders are present. For example:

Pharmaceutical manufacturing often involves mixing fine powders or solves. ATEX-certified load cells are needed in these processes for accurate weighing during batching, mixing and filling.

Food production is commonly associated with ATEX environments through manufacturers that work dusts, such as flour mills, confectionaries, bakeries, cereal manufacturers, spice factories, egg- or milk powder manufacturing and processing, coffee manufacturers and sites that work with nuts or powdered nuts. In these industries, silos, mixers, or conveyors often have requirements for ATEX compliance.

Chemical processing frequently uses volatile substances in their manufacturing processes. ATEX load cells are therefore commonly needed in weighing drums, tanks, or reactors.

Understanding ATEX Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22

ATEX zones define the level of risk from explosive atmospheres. It is divided into Gas ATEX Zones and dust ATEX zones.

  • Zone 0: An area that has a continuous presence of gases or vapors during normal operations.

  • Zone 1: An area that is likely to have a presence of gases or vapors during normal operations.

  • Zone 2: An area that is unlikely to have a presence of gases or vapors during normal operations.

  • Zone 20: An area that has a continuous presence of dust during normal operations.

  • Zone 21: An area that is likely to have a presence of dust during normal operations.

  • Zone 22: An area that is unlikely to have a presence of dust during normal operations.
